Private Utility Locating in Utah
Blue Stakes marks public utilities up to the meter. Everything past it is private and unmarked. We locate those private lines with ground penetrating radar before you excavate.
Launching mid-to-late October 2026 — call now to get on the schedule.
What Blue Stakes doesn't mark
Utah law requires utility owners to mark only the lines they own, usually up to the meter. Blue Stakes itself tells excavators to consider a private locator for the rest. That includes:
- ▪Power between buildings, to site lighting, gates, signs and outbuildings
- ▪Water and irrigation mains on private property
- ▪Gas lines to pools, fire pits, shops and generators
- ▪Communications and low-voltage between buildings
- ▪Sewer and storm laterals on site
Who calls us
Excavators, landscapers, fence and pole installers, solar crews, directional borers, general contractors, and property managers on campuses, schools and commercial sites.
What you get
- ▪Private lines marked on the ground in standard APWA colors
- ▪Depth estimates where the radar can read them
- ▪Photos and a short written summary of what was found
- ▪Fast scheduling, including same-day when available
Always call 811 too. Private locating works alongside your free Blue Stakes ticket, never instead of it.
Questions
Can GPR find plastic pipe?+
Often, yes. Unlike basic line locators, radar can pick up non-metallic lines. Results depend on soil type and moisture, and we'll tell you on site what we can and can't confirm.
Do you also do concrete scanning?+
Yes. If your dig starts with a cut through a slab, we can clear the slab and locate the lines under it in one visit.
